You’ve started a morning meditation practice.
You cozy up with a cup of hot tea.
You write your morning pages in your journal.
But something isn’t right… it’s hard to get comfortable and drop into the right mood. What’s missing?
Question: have you designed an intentional space?
After years of designing retreats at Bliss Farm, we’re experts in creating calm and inspiring space for inner journeys. In fact, that’s how we got our start with Bliss Design — apparently we can’t get enough of making blissful spaces.
Since we’re passionate about creating calm spaces to live and dream in — whether we’re designing a yoga retreat or remodeling a living room — we gathered up a few pointers on designing your own meditation space at home. Let’s dive in.
Create your own meditation space
Our surroundings impact our well being, and how you feel in your space is important. If you’re being as intentional as it takes to create a meditation and journaling practice — congratulations.
You’re amazing! And you deserve to spend that time in a cohesive and grounding space that’s designed to help you arrive at that inner state of calm.
Maybe it’s a small room, part of your back porch, or just a corner of another room in your house. Wherever you choose, taking time to create an intentional meditation nook can ground your practice, appeal to all your senses, and make meditation a time in your day you always look forward to, even — or especially — on your most difficult days.
Include meaningful items
Fill your space with pieces that evoke pleasant feelings and memories for you. Do you have a mini deity you picked up on a trip to Thailand? A framed photo from a dear friend? You’re creating this space to step into tranquility, so choose items with intention to help conjure that peaceful state.
Ground your nook with plants
If you’re asking us, getting outside for a forest walk is one of the best ways to uplift our mood and calm our nerves. But what about when you have just 30 minutes to yourself in the morning to meditate? Adorn your meditation space with plants to help ground you and calm your nervous system. Plus, they’re beautiful to look at.
Relax with scent
Scent can transport us in an instant. Consider the smell of grandma’s cookies, family pancakes on a Sunday morning, or your favorite forest walk. We love to burn incense, a simple aromatherapy diffuser or a soy-based candle when we sit down in our meditation space — as long as the ingredients are non-toxic. Choose an aroma that has calming properties, like lavender, or choose a scent based on something you love, like an evergreen resin that reminds you of the woods.
Cozy up with pillows and throws
Maybe the most important piece of your idea meditation nook — super comfortable pillows and throws. Depending on how you like to meditate, you may want a chair or just a cushion, totally up to you. A We love to lay a soft blanket across our lap when we meditate to drop in even quicker.
